Highlighting a Community Event That Matters
In this episode of The Autism Podcast, I sat down with Jody Cox, Miami-Dade County’s ADA Project Administrator. We discussed the upcoming Disability Resource Fair and what it means for families in our community.
From my perspective as an autism dadvocate, accessibility is about much more than compliance checklists. It is about families knowing they can rely on public spaces, programs, and services to actually meet their loved ones’ needs.
The Purpose of the Annual Disability Resource Fair
Jody explained that the Disability Resource Fair is designed to connect families with people and organizations providing education, therapy, housing, and healthcare services. It is also a chance for government departments and nonprofits to showcase how they are meeting ADA requirements.
For many families, this event is their first step in discovering programs that can transform their daily lives.
Accessibility and ADA Compliance in Focus
Jody highlighted Miami-Dade’s commitment to making sure county programs meet ADA standards. This includes physical accessibility and ensuring services are designed with disability needs in mind.
From my perspective as an autism advocate, accessibility is about much more than compliance checklists. It is about families knowing they can rely on public spaces, programs, and services to actually meet their loved ones’ needs.
Why Families Should Attend
The Special Needs Fair is not just an event—it is an opportunity. Families can leave with real contacts, useful information, and renewed confidence.
As Jody shared, when parents and caregivers are informed, their loved ones are better supported. That is the ultimate goal.
