Why Autism Safety Demands Attention
In this episode of The Autism Podcast, I spoke with Bart Barta and Kent Schomber of Autism Safety 101. We addressed one of the toughest issues Law Enforcement & First Responders face—interaction with individuals on the spectrum and elopement response.
As an autism advocate and father to a nonverbal child, I know how terrifying these incidents can be. Law Enforcement & First Responders need tools, awareness, and training.
The Mission of Autism Safety 101
Bart explained how Autism Safety 101 began as an effort to educate Law Enforcement & First Responders. Their goal is simple: prevent tragedy by preparing them for risks before they happen.
Bart added, “We don’t want the public to live in fear. We want them to feel equipped, supported, and never alone.”
That statement resonated with me because it reflects what advocacy should always be about—empowerment through knowledge and training.
Practical Strategies Families
Bart emphasized the importance of communication between the public and local Law Enforcement. He explained that a prepared Officer or First Responder can make the difference in a critical situation.
As an advocate, I stress the same point in my work. Building these relationships before an emergency is key.
Why Advocacy and Safety Intersect
This conversation reminded me that advocacy is not only about policy or awareness. It is also about giving us all life-saving strategies. Autism Safety 101 is not just a program—it is a mindset shift that empowers.
