What The Children’s Trust Does for Kids with Disabilities
In this episode of The Autism Podcast, I spoke with Rachel Spector, Director of Programs at The Children’s Trust. We explored how trust-funded programs support children with disabilities across Miami-Dade.
Rachel explained that all Trust–funded agencies must welcome children with disabilities through reasonable accommodations. She shared how their Early Childhood Development portfolio includes psycho-educational autism assessments and short-term intervention services.
After-School, Summer, and Lifelong Learning
We also discussed after-school and summer programs overseen by the Trust. These provide safe, enriching spaces for children beyond regular school hours. They serve tens of thousands of young people across neighborhoods.
Rachel stated, “We believe every child can thrive when given the right supports, regardless of ability.” That struck me deeply. Because as an Autism Dadvocate, I’ve seen how such support unlocks opportunity.
Why Early Intervention Matters
Rachel stressed the importance of the first 5 years. Their Thrive by 5 initiative offers early learning, screenings, and child care scholarships. Families with developmental concerns often need these services before state systems engage.
We agreed that acting early not only improves outcomes, but also reduces stress for families navigating complex systems.
Partnering to Bridge Gaps
Rachel mentioned that The Children’s Trust partners with dozens of local providers. They fund capacity building so providers can serve children with disabilities more effectively. They invest in training, coaching, and accessible program materials.
Looking Ahead: Hope and Action
Our conversation ended with a message of hope. The work is not done, but the momentum is strong.
Families like mine depend on services that actually show up. The Children’s Trust is doing that work.
